The Future Looks Bright for Norwegian Engineers

May 7, 2025

5 quick questions about work, values, and opportunities with Frode Vatnelid, Regional Manager at NECON.

We’ve started a new tradition here at NECON. Each quarter, we have a quick chat with one of our partners to hear what’s happening in the market and in the company. First up was Erling Oftedal in January. Now it’s Frode Vatnelid, Regional Manager at NECON, who’s next in line.

1. How do you see the outlook for Norwegian engineers?

– Very promising. In a turbulent global situation, we’re seeing increasing demand for Norwegian engineers, and many of our clients are specifically looking for candidates who have both language skills and experience from the Norwegian industrial landscape. Even though many companies commonly operate using English, Norwegian language still often comes up as a requirement when they’re searching for new talent. This doesn’t mean international expertise isn’t welcome – but for roles involving collaboration with Norwegian suppliers or clients, language and relevant local experience are highly valued.

2. What advice would you give your younger self as a newly graduated engineer?

– Be aware of your skills and what you want! Read job ads carefully and try to understand what they’re actually looking for. You don’t always need to meet every single requirement, but don’t waste time applying for positions that are a poor match – that only leads to unnecessary disappointment. Make sure your CV is clear and fact-based. Highlight the specific knowledge and skills you have that are relevant for the job.

– For recent graduates, I also recommend including a short summary of your bachelor’s or master’s thesis if it’s within the field you’re aiming to work in. Even if you hold a higher degree, it’s important to include relevant hands-on experience you’ve gained. If you have both a university degree and a vocational certificate, that’s often seen as a major advantage.

3. What makes you proud to work at NECON?

– I’m proud to work at a company that values integrity and professionalism. NECON is committed to finding the right solutions for both candidates and clients – and doing it without compromising ethical principles or legal requirements. We aim to act in a way that people can trust, and that feels fair to everyone involved.

4. How do you connect with NECON’s core values?

– At NECON, we truly live by our values: Generous, Engaging, Making Each Other Better & Innovative. These aren’t just nice words on a wall. They’re actively used, especially when we’re facing tough decisions. That was one of the first things I noticed when I started working here.

5. What do you think sets NECON apart from other consulting firms?

– Our follow-up. We have a close relationship with our employees – from the application process to the assignment at the client’s site. We know them, understand their competencies, and follow up closely.

– We simply make the time to listen, talk, support, and find good solutions. When a project is nearing its end, we’re already working on the next great match – always in dialogue with the consultant. Our HR philosophy is rooted in generosity and care – and that’s something NECON does exceptionally well.
